Guinea’s authorities announced that Presidential elections run-off will take place on September 19th. Travellers should be aware that on the polls day, frontiers as well as airspace will be closed, as a consequence all flights in and out of Conakry will be cancelled.
About 4.2 million Guineans are eligible to vote either for Cellou Dalein Diallo of the Guinea Union of Democratic Forces (UFDG) or for Professor Alpha Conde of the Guinea People’s Rally (RPG). Guinea has been ruled by a succession of military and civilian autocrats since independence in 1958.
Most of the western embassies advise against all but essential travel to Guinea. If you are in Guinea, it is firmly recommended to avoid all public gatherings, political meeting as well as other demonstrations, police and military installations, government buildings and places of worship.
