Experiencing the beautiful landscape of Chile is a travel experience that many would enjoy. But what if it involved more than a mile of swimming, 56 miles of cycling, and 13 miles of running to top it off – and all in one day? Welcome to Pucón, Chile where on Jan 15 the brave and the ultra fit will compete in the Pucón Ironman triathlon. Run annually since 1984, the inaugural triathlon had only 150 competitors. Nearly 20 years later it continues to grow to the surprise of its creators with up to 900 signing-up. The race’s main attraction is its scenic surroundings that include the Villarrica Volcano and Lake Villarrica, where entrants will begin the race. Last year’s race saw unrelenting rain pour down on the athletes, but neither the mood nor the competitiveness wavered. The top 30 finishers will qualify for entrance into the World Championships in Las Vegas next October. For those not quite ready for the Ironman, a shorter promotional race and a kids race will also take place.
Traveling to Chile a great to escape winter
Even if competing in triathlons is not your idea of a vacation, visiting Chile during the winter will brighten your days. The weather maybe cold in the north, but down south the clothes will be shed for some rays. Americans don’t need a visa and can visit up to 90 days without one. The country that stretches 2,670 miles down the coastline of South America can be experienced on its beaches, on mountain glaciers and in bars full of character. The only travel alert warns visitors of the active Chaitén volcano in the southern region of Los Lagos.
