On Thursday, November 5th, tropical storm Ida hit Nicaragua's Corn Island causing telephone cuts, damaging electrical lines and leading to the evacuation of 300 people.

On Thursday, November 5th, tropical storm Ida, the ninth named storm of the Atlantic season, hit Nicaragua's Corn Island causing telephone cuts, damaging electrical lines and leading to the evacuation of 300 people. A hurricane watch remains in effect for the eastern coast of Nicaragua from Bluefields northward to the Honduras/Nicaragua border while a tropical storm warning remains in effect for the entire eastern coast of Nicaragua. Flash floods and mudslide are expected in the area.

The Atlantic hurricane season is running from June to November. A tropical storm has maximum sustained winds between 39 miles per hour (63 km/h) and 73 miles per hour (117 km/h), while a hurricane is a system with sustained winds of at least 74 miles per hour (119 km/h). A tropical storm warning indicates stormy conditions are expected in the area within 24 hours, whereas a hurricane watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 36 hours.

If a hurricane is likely to occur in your area, you should stay informed through the radio or TV and follow the authorities' recommendations. Secure your home, close storm shutters, and secure outdoor objects if possible or bring them indoors. Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water. Prepare to evacuate.
