Germany’s winter race goes to the dogs

At the end of January people and K-9s will descend on Germany’s Black Forest for a weekend of dog-sled racing. The event that attracts thousands to the villages of Todtmoos each year, including more than a hundred racing teams of huskies, continues a tradition of racing that began more than 30 years ago. In what could be called a true winter experience, for two days small snow-covered villages come alive with the buzz of an international event. Located deep in the Black Forest in the southwest of Germany, Todtmoos is made up of 13 remote villages surrounded by nature in its purest form. Dramatic and beautiful terrain that includes mountains with views of the Alps, along with deep ravines and sweeping hills make for an incredible backdrop as the dog teams carve their way through the trails over an icy track. The location and history of the event has made the region renowned for dog-sled racing, hosting multiple world championship events that have seen more than 40,000 spectators line the course.

A unique travel experience to Germany

What better way to discover the German culture than traveling to the Todtmoos, even if dog-sled racing is not your thing. The region and its villages will reveal traditional German culture in an ancient setting; very different from the big cities of Berlin and Munich. Visiting in winter will provide a picturesque setting of show-tipped trees and evenings spent relaxed in front of the fireplace. Activities such as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing will keep visitors active. Summers provide a different experience, full of hiking and cycling.
