One of smokers’ last safe havens to light-up is cracking down on the habit. Cruise lines around the world are banning smoking in all public areas of ships, including in staterooms and on balconies. The announcement comes as cruise operators cite that only a minority of passengers smoke, and the rest who do not prefer having a smoke-free environment.

However, smokers will be given designated areas to get their fix on certain ships, such as cigar lounges, special rooms in casinos and discos, and on the open deck. Cruise line Holland America says that fines of $250 USD will be handed out for guests who break the rules and smoke in their rooms. Some companies will permit the use of electronic, or e-cigarettes, to help them wean off of real tobacco. Some reports show that up to 1 million Americans are opting to use e-cigarettes. The electronic version that stimulates the true experience, including the nicotine, is being allowed because no real smoke is released. Despite the declining numbers of smokers, 1 in 4 Americans still indulge in a cigarette.

Travelers to find new habit

The numbers say that smoking among travelers on cruise lines has fallen to single digit percentages. But for those who still smoke be sure to visit the cruise line website before booking to know the rules. Each operator is adapting different policies pertaining to where smoking is permitted. If the idea of no smoking is impossible during a cruise, some companies in Europe still allow smoking in all areas of the ship, while others continue to permit smoking in passenger cabins.
